Salix
Devices
A device is a machine attached to Salix. Attach any Linux or macOS machine, and your agents can run commands and open files on it.
How Comma uses devices
When you connect your Mac to Comma, the Mac app attaches it to Salix as a device. That is how Comma finds a file on your Mac, or updates one.
Access starts read-only
When you attach a machine, agents get read-only access to it. They can do more only after you allow it. You can revoke a device at any time, and agents then lose access to it.
Devices and cloud VMs
An agent does not need a device to do its work. When it needs a computer and no device is attached, Salix wakes a cloud VM with persistent storage for the agent.
Salix never moves work from one machine to another on its own. If a device is offline, a request to it fails with an error, and the agent can try again when the device is back.
Agent runtimes on a device
A device can also run an external agent runtime, such as Codex or Claude Code. See Agent runtimes.
