Comma vs Hermes Agent: a Hermes Agent alternative you use in an app
Hermes Agent is Nous Research's MIT-licensed agent that you install and run from a terminal, or rent on Hermes Cloud by the day, and it writes its own skills as it works. Comma is open source too, under AGPL-3.0. You use it in a Mac app or a web app, starting on the Free plan, or run it on your own server. Each request becomes a Task, and your decisions wait in Needs Review.
- Free to start
- Open source (AGPL-3.0)
- Self-host with Docker Compose

Comma vs Hermes Agent: Where it runs
Hermes Agent runs where you install it, or on Hermes Cloud. Comma runs in its own cloud, or on a server you manage.
Hermes Agent installs with one command on macOS, Linux, WSL2 or Windows, or runs in Docker, and it can send its commands to other backends such as SSH, Modal or Daytona. Hermes Cloud runs it for you and bills each day the machine runs, from US$0.56 a day, with model calls and tools billed on top.
Hosted Comma gives each Workspace a cloud computer that starts when a Task needs it and stops a few minutes after the work ends, so your Mac can be closed. To keep your data on your own machine, self-host Comma: Docker Compose starts its web app, Admin console, API and agent runtime beside PostgreSQL, Redis, ClickHouse and object storage.

Comma vs Hermes Agent: How you work with it
Hermes Agent starts in a terminal. Comma starts in an app.
Hermes Agent's main interface is a terminal, with slash commands and streaming tool output. A desktop app for macOS and Windows arrived in June 2026, a web dashboard handles administration, and a gateway connects it to about 30 chat apps. There is no official phone app.
Comma has a Mac app and a web app, where each request that needs work becomes a Task on a board with three columns: In progress, Needs Review and Done. Comma moves the cards itself, and a decision that is yours waits in Needs Review. You can also hand work to Comma from Signal or Telegram; its iOS and Android apps are coming soon.

Comma vs Hermes Agent: Learning and memory
Hermes Agent is built around skills it writes for itself. Comma is built around one agent that keeps your context.
After multi-step work, or after you correct it, Hermes Agent writes a skill for the task and improves it as it uses it. Its memory is two short files, one about the work and one about you, and it can search its past sessions.
Comma is sessionless: one agent keeps your work, memory and context across your devices and conversations, so you do not start over with each chat. You can add Skills, Plugins and MCP servers to extend what it can do, and Routines prepares a briefing before your day starts.

- One agent with your work, memory and context, on every device.

Hermes Agent- Skills it writes and improves itself, plus two small memory files.
Comma vs Hermes Agent: Safety on your computer
Hermes Agent runs commands on its host and asks a model to judge them. Comma starts read-only.
Hermes Agent's security policy says it is built for a single user, that its default backend runs commands on the host, and that the operating system is the only real boundary against a model that misbehaves. By default a second model judges the risk of each command before it runs; you can switch to manual approval, or turn the checks off.
Comma can read files on a connected computer, and changes them or runs commands only after you turn on Allow operations for that computer. Apps connect with scoped permissions that you can revoke, and agents never see your raw credentials. Inside a Task, a decision that is yours waits in Needs Review.
- Comma
- Read-only by default, scoped app access, and your decisions in Needs Review.

Hermes Agent- Commands on the host, with a model judging each one by default.
Comma vs Hermes Agent: Models and cost
Both let you bring your own model. Hermes Agent also runs local models.
Hermes Agent recommends Nous Portal, which offers hundreds of models on plans from free to US$200 a month. It also works with OpenRouter, Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, with local models through Ollama, LM Studio or vLLM, and with a ChatGPT sign-in. The software is free; you pay for the machine and the model calls.
Comma uses its own models by default. You can bring your own API key, use your ChatGPT or Claude plan, choose a model for each role, or let Codex or Claude Code do the work on a computer you connect. The Free plan costs US$0 with unlimited chat, and a self-hosted Comma needs no plan at all.

FAQs
Is Comma a good Hermes Agent alternative?
If you want an app instead of a terminal, yes. Comma has a Mac app and a web app with a Free plan, works around the clock on its own cloud computer, and is open source under AGPL-3.0. Hermes Agent suits you better if you want an agent that writes its own skills and you are at home in a terminal.
Is Comma open source like Hermes Agent?
Yes. Comma is open source under AGPL-3.0, and Hermes Agent under MIT. Both let you read and change the code. If you serve a changed version of Comma to other people, the AGPL asks you to keep its source available to them.
Do I need a terminal to use Comma?
No. Sign in to the web app or the Mac app with your email address and a code. Only self-hosting uses a terminal, to start Comma with Docker Compose.
How does Comma remember my work?
One agent keeps your work, memory and context across your devices and conversations, so you do not start a new session for each request. You can add Skills, Plugins and MCP servers to extend what it can do.
What can Comma do on my computer?
At first, Comma can only read files on a connected computer. To let it change files, run commands and use the coding agents installed there, turn on Allow operations for that computer in Settings. Turn it off at any time, and Comma is back to read-only.
Which models can Comma use?
Comma uses its own models by default. You can also bring your own API key, or your ChatGPT or Claude plan, and choose a model for each role. On a self-hosted Comma, you set one model for the whole instance, or each person adds a private model.
